When patching leaks stops making sense

Many homes in Bessemer, Hueytown, Fairfield and the older neighborhoods of western Jefferson County still have their original water pipes. Galvanized steel rusts from the inside until the pipe is half closed; polybutylene (the gray plastic pipe used in the 1980s and early 90s) gets brittle and fails at the fittings; old copper can develop pinhole leaks. Once a house has had two or three leaks, the next one is usually not far away.

Repiping replaces the water supply lines throughout the house with new pipe, so the leaks, the rusty water and the weak shower are fixed at once instead of one emergency at a time.

Signs your home needs repiping

  • Repeated leaks in different places.
  • Rusty, brown or metallic-tasting water, especially in the morning.
  • Low water pressure in several fixtures that cleaning aerators does not fix.
  • Gray polybutylene pipe at the water heater or under sinks.
  • Visible corrosion, green or white crust on fittings.
  • The house is more than 50 years old and still has its original galvanized pipe.

PEX or copper?

PEX is flexible, resists corrosion and freezing better than rigid pipe and needs fewer fittings and smaller wall openings – the most common choice for repiping today. Copper has a long track record and is a good option where it is preferred or required. We explain the difference in cost and lifespan for your home and install either one.

How a repipe works

  1. Inspection and quote – we look at the existing pipe, the crawlspace or attic and plan the new routes.
  2. Protection – floors and furniture are covered, work areas are kept clean.
  3. New lines – we run new supply lines to every fixture, often through the crawlspace or attic with small openings in walls.
  4. Connection and test – fixtures and the water heater are reconnected, the system is pressure-tested and flushed.
  5. Patch and clean up – openings are closed and we leave the house clean.

Most homes are repiped in a few days, and you have water at the end of most working days.

Repiping questions

How long does it take to repipe a house?
Most single-family homes take two to five days, depending on size, access and the number of bathrooms.
Will I be without water the whole time?
No. We usually restore water at the end of each working day.
Is PEX safe for drinking water?
Yes. PEX for potable water is certified for drinking water and widely used in new homes.
Do I need to repipe if I have polybutylene pipe?
Polybutylene is known to fail without warning, and some insurers ask about it. Replacing it is strongly recommended.

Dallas came in to fix the original issue after finding out what was causing the water pressure problem. Was quick and on time. Then he had to come out a 2nd time cause an unrelated issue (slow drainage) occurred and was able to come back that afternoon and take care of that. Shawn also answered the phone during the weekend, which most plumbing companies will not and make you wait until their normal hours before setting up an appt.

Man I don't even know what to say about these guys. Called them up and they were here immediately and identified an issue that no other company could. I was shocked when they said they could fix it the same day. It was a rather big job replacing pretty much all pipes under my house. Excellent customer service with honesty and integrity. Call them for anything and they'll get you squared away.

These people are great and wonderful!!! This is not an AI generated review. Honest to God customer. After a failed attempt of DIYing my front outside faucet and breaking the copper pipe from it being so old, I gave these people a call. Even spoke to a human being ,Shaun, at 9 o' clock P.M. He sent one of his guys out in the morning and managed to get things back to normal. If I have any other plumbing issues I plan of calling these guys again!!!! Thank yall so much for the rescue!!!!!!
